My Journey to Santiago de Compostela Part XI
This was quite an easy walk and it was mostly flat. We went through vineyards and plantation of olive trees for the entire day. We crossed the small towns of Azofra, San Millan de la Cogolla and Cirueña. One of the monuments on the way was a cross made out of stone where the community from the nearby village would hang and expose the bodies of people who had committed crimes so they would serve as an example and a deterrent to future sinners.
We were quite happy to arrive at Santo Domingo de la Calzada early enough to do some sightseeing. I actually did some shopping… bought a pair of sandals to wear in the evenings instead of my flip flops. I had booked a room at Hospederia Cistercience, which is ran by a congregation of Catholic Nuns. It had a private bedroom and the bathroom was shared. Very clean and correct.
That evening is when I got an invitation from a Danish couple whom I had met a couple of days ago, Bent Porsborg and his wife Henrietta. Bent happens to own the company which makes Diablitos Underwood, a ham-flavored spread widely used in Venezuela to eat with arepas or on toasts. Bent and Henrietta are a fabulous couple and I am so happy I shared time with them on the Camino. We keep in touch on Whatsapp and are now Camino Friends.
