The rising cost of living is the most pressing concern for more than 90% of Europeans. Official data sheds light on what's behind this growing anxiety - and where people are paying the most for basics.
Housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels accounted for the largest share of household consumption in the EU in 2022, representing 24.1%, according to data from Eurostat.
This was followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages at 13.6%, while transport costs accounted for 12.5%. While the ranking of these categories has remained consistent over the past 20 years, their relative shares have changed over time.
